Design space exploration and design optimization will be prominent topics at the NAFEMS 2016 Americas Conference June 7-9 in Seattle. These presentation abstracts from the just-published preliminary conference agenda promise a rich and rewarding program for attendees: Continue reading
Altair’s just-introduced HyperWorks 14.0 has more than 2,100 new features, all aimed at advancing the company’s vision to enable “simulation-driven innovation.” New or enhanced capabilities include efficient parts and assemblies management, extremely fast graphics engine to handle even the largest models, new solutions for linear and nonlinear structural analysis, multiphysics analysis of structural, electromagnetic and fluid flow phenomena, optimization-based analysis and system-level design exploration.
For exploration and optimization of design performance and robustness, HyperWorks includes the HyperStudy solver-neutral study, optimization and stochastic studies software. The new HyperStudy 14.0 provides a range of new features to let users explore designs even more thoroughly and efficiently. From quickly picking design parameters in HyperMesh to a new streamlined response definition experience, a key focus of the new release is to make it even easier to set up HyperStudy to run investigations. A new inclusion matrix allows optimizers to utilize existing run information, increasing the optimizer’s efficiency and making the most of users’ data. An automatic cross-validation check can save time by calculating checks on the Fit quality without a dedicated validation matrix. Continue reading
Last week’s case study looked at how Stanley Black & Decker’s DeWALT Industrial Tools brand optimized the efficiency and user comfort of its products at the same time as their robustness and durability with Altair’s AcuSolve, HyperMesh and HyperStudy software. This week’s story is how Stanley Black & Decker chose Altair’s HyperWorks Unlimited appliance to optimize its CAE processes for power tool design. The fully managed HPC system includes unlimited license for the HyperWorks suite of solvers, design exploration, meshing and visualization products as well as the PBS Works suite for HPC workload management.
Challenge: Improving the capacity for design optimization and innovation
As a global power tool leader, Stanley Black & Decker (SBD) is constantly seeking ways to maintain a competitive edge and bring better-performing products to market faster. In particular, when it came to optimizing the hammer mechanism design for their top-selling rotary hammers, SBD engineers knew they needed a CAE-based approach. Continue reading
Development of modern electric power tools for professional applications requires simultaneous attention to two sets of product attributes: those that determine a tool’s efficiency and user comfort, and those that determine its robustness and durability. To optimize both sets of attributes together, Stanley Black & Decker Deutschland GmbH relies on computer-aided simulation using Altair’s AcuSolve CFD flow solver in combination with its HyperMorph mesh manipulation tool and HyperStudy multidisciplinary design exploration, study and optimization software. In a paper presented at the 2013 European Altair Technology Conference in Turin, Italy, the company described how these simulations were used throughout the product development cycle—from the pre-development phase, through testing near-series prototypes, and beyond to improving designs based on product-failure returns. Discussions of how to simulate early in product development fixate too often on FEA, overlooking the power of systems modeling and 0D/1D simulation for studying, exploring and optimizing designs at the beginning of projects, when product geometry is seldom available for 3D CAE but engineering decision-making can have its greatest impact and leverage on project success. If you use design space exploration software, we invite you to take our five-minute survey of satisfaction with your software and vendor, and the benefits you’re realizing, via one of the links below. In return you’ll receive a report of the findings that will let you benchmark your experiences against those of your peers and competitors. Your participation and responses are strictly confidential. Findings will be discussed in aggregate only; no information about individual responses will be released. This survey is our own undertaking and is not commissioned by, nor executed in cooperation with, any software vendor or other party.
To take the survey, click the link for the software you use. If you use more than one brand, take the survey for each brand you use. If you don’t see your software here, click the Other brand link and write in your brand where the survey asks for it. We value your input and look forward to sharing the findings with you.

Design optimization is the search for a structural design that is optimal in one or more respects. In all the various methods available for optimization, the design is guided to satisfy operating limits imposed on the response of the structure, and by further limits on the values that the structural parameters can assume. The power of numerical optimization is its ability to rationally and rapidly search through alternatives for the best possible design(s). Continue reading
Automating the search for solutions to engineering problems can take either of two broad approaches: design exploration or design optimization. Practitioners making technology choices need to understand which tools do one, which do the other, and which approach best fits their needs. A global roster of commercially available design exploration and optimization software appears at the end of this post. Continue reading
